The First Weekend Recap — The World Cup 2014 According to Billy Raikes

The weekend recap:

First, an order of business.  We have three more entries submitted to our office pool from late comers (Avery) and 2 other slackers, bringing the coveted grand prize total to $30. All brackets look fairly strong and similar, some diversity after the semi-finals. One bracket wasn’t even a bracket, but an indecipherable list of countries.

Now onto the games…

The Spain v. Netherlands game speaks for itself: it shaked all of us a little in our brackets. And that’s all I’ll say on the matter to let others save face.

Nothing else exciting happened until Costa Rica made history by scoring 3 goals against the formidable Uruguay and clinching the upset.  Japan also looked poised to beat Ivory Coast, but then lost the early lead in the second half.

Haris Seferovic’s Stoppage Time Goal Hands Switzerland Win Over Ecuador

Switzerland won the most exciting game so far, as they scored in the last 30 seconds of the game to beat Ecuador.

In a match that looked destined to end in a draw, substitute Seferovic fired home the winner in the closing seconds
